100 10th graders polled in Westchester
69% bought music online
73% downloaded from P2P sites
86% knew downloading was illegal
But only 58% knew the consequences
56% thought they would never get caught
68% have never read about anyone getting caught
Only 3% know of someone getting caught
Piracy among teens and tweens is a given. And parents don't seem to care. I am less concerned about the music industry loses than I am about the effect of the activities on the ethics of our kids. A recent survey conducted by one of my Teenangels chapters in New Rochelle, NY disclosed that the kids are both buying and stealing. It's a matter of their allowance surplus and availability.
And one of my pet peeves is that when parents and kids care, they buy a premium subscription to limewire and other P2P sites only to find out that they aren't getting a subscription to the music, just an ad and spyware-free version of the sharing software. They are being deceived, over and over.
We need ot do something about this. It's time.
